After Thursday nights defeat to Romanian Champs Dinamo Bucharest, ‘Well gaffer Mark McGhee fielded a much changed line-up but it was the full squad who played a part in a fine win against very decent opposition.
The Poles started the better of the two sides and dominated much of the early proceedings. Indeed, they had one or two half-chances to get on the score sheet but nothing that would trouble Graeme Smith in the ‘Well goal. As the half wore on however, the Steelmen were gaining the upper-hand and that was capped by the opening goal nine minutes before the half-time interval. Steve McGarry’s cross from the left was on partially cleared which allowed Kenny Connolly to header a pass to Simon Mensing who hooked home from the edge of the area into the far corner.
‘Well had a penalty claim shortly afterwards but although turned-down, the side weren’t to be denied doubling their advantage just before the break and once again, the goal was created on the left hand side of midfield. Steve McGarry once again found himself in an attacking position on the flank. His short pass to Danny Murphy invited the deep cross aiming for Chris Porter at the back post. The Englishmen did well to get his head on it and the bouncing ball found the late run of that man Mensing again and the midfielder crashed the ball low into the bottom corner for his second of the evening.
Motherwell made a series of changes both at half-time and shortly afterwards. One of those subs was Polish trialist Adam Czerkas. He had hardly been on the park when he too got his name on the score sheet. Fantastic midfield play by Marc Fitzpatrick set-up Darren Smith in the left channel. His neat cut-back was slightly behind Keith Lasley but feel perfectly for Czerkas who hit the ball off the ground and over the keeper for ‘Well’s third of the night.
It could’ve been four near the end and a hat-trick for Simon Mensing only for the referee to chalk the goal off. A Ross McCormack corner kick was right on top of the goalkeeper and with Czerkas challenging, the ball fell kindly for Mensing who acrobatically over-head kicked the ball into the empty net but the whistle had long gone. It was to be the last action of the game and indeed, Motherwell’s tour of Austria in 2007.
‘Well: Graeme Smith (Robert Gubiec – 45mins), Martyn Corrigan (Paul Quinn – 60mins), Danny Murphy (William Kinniburgh – 60mins), David Nixon, Stephen Craigan (Adam Czerkas – 60mins), Kenny Connolly (Marc Fitzpatrick – 45mins), Keith Lasley, Simon Mensing, Stevie McGarry (Ross McCormack – 45mins), David Clarkson (Jim Paterson - 53mins), Chris Porter (Darren Smith – 53mins) Motherwell

Almost exactly a year ago: Czerkas Signs for QPR
Gianni Paladini and Gary Waddock welcome
Adam Czerkas to Loftus Road
Gary Waddock's prolonged search for a striker is finally over - after Polish front-man Adam Czerkas today (Tuesday) put pen to paper on a one year loan deal with the R's.
The 22 year-old - who impressed Waddock during pre-season training and again in a behind-closed-doors friendly on Saturday - signed on the dotted line at Loftus Road this evening.
Rangers have the option of signing the Kolporter Korona SSA striker on a permanent basis at the end of his loan spell.
Waddock was understandably delighted about sealing his fifth summer signing, commenting: "It's no secret that we've been on the look out for a striker for months, not just weeks, and our patience has finally been rewarded.
"Obviously I'm delighted we've secured his services and if what we've seen in training and in the practice match is anything to go by, R's fans are in for a treat next season.
"He's got a great eye for goal, has terrific movement, is good with his back to goal and has the unique ability of being able to get in behind defenders.
"He'll complement our current crop of attackers and we've got extremely high hopes for him next season.''
The former Kolporter Korona SSA attacker - who measures in at 6'1'' and will wear the number 28 shirt - is in line to make his R's debut against Stevenage Borough on Wednesday.
