Football League - September 7, 2007 - Managers urge fans to turn their rubbish into cash for clubs

Football League managers have helped launch 'Coca-Cola' Talent from Trash - an innovative programme that rewards Football League clubs and their fans for pledging to recycle more and raising household waste recycling levels in their communities. Fans can win up to £18,000 for their club to spend on youth development if they pledge to recycle more at www.talent-from-trash.com. One lucky fan of a Football League club will also win an extra £10,000 for their club and £5,000 for themselves by pledging their commitment online.

Entering the programme is easy. Fans can pledge once a day online. The number of pledges received each week will be counted and clubs will be rewarded with a corresponding level of prize money. Clubs will also win extra cash based on the recorded uplift of household waste recycling levels in their areas during the 12 weeks (versus the same period in 2006). All household waste materials are counted - glass, plastic, paper, aluminium, steel and cardboard.

When fans pledge to recycle they are entered into a free prize draw to win an extra £10,000 for their club and £5,000 for themselves. Plus, the fan who makes the most pledges at each club will win a 'money can't buy' prize from their club, for example, signed shirts.

As a minimum, participating clubs are guaranteed £3,400 to spend on youth development rising to £18,000 if the top targets are met. It's simple - pledge to recycle, recycle more, win cash for your club's youth development!

There are 13 clubs taking part in 'Coca-Cola' Talent from Trash: Accrington Stanley, Brentford, Burnley, Cardiff City, Coventry City, Huddersfield Town, Norwich City, Nottingham Forest, QPR, Southampton, Swansea City, Swindon Town and Wycombe Wanderers.

Sanjay Guha, President, Coca-Cola Great Britain said: "We're committed to doing business in ways that help protect and preserve the environment - and this means improving our own manufacturing and packaging processes to reduce waste and raw materials, as well as encouraging consumers to recycle more. We know lots of people would like to be rewarded for the effort they make to recycle and we hope the incentives of 'Talent from Trash' will help encourage football fans and their families to get involved in recycling for the benefit of the environment and their local football club."

Chairman of the Football League, Lord Mawhinney said: "By pledging to recycle their household waste supporters will make a positive impact in a number of different ways. Firstly they will be providing a boost to their club's youth development programme, secondly they will give themselves the chance of winning a cash prize and thirdly, and perhaps most importantly, they will be making a contribution towards protecting our environment. Therefore, this is a win-win-win situation that I am sure all the fans want to be a part of."

Fridey Cordingley, Head of the 'Recycle Now' campaign at WRAP (the government funded Waste Resources & Action Programme) said: "Our own 'Recycle Now' campaign is about getting people to recycle more things more often. Coca-Cola's 'Talent from Trash' initiative can help towards this goal and we support it. Partnering with local authorities and encouraging communities to increase recycling for the benefit of the local football club is an inspired way to get people motivated to do their bit. Every person can make a difference. We hope everyone will get behind this innovative initiative and get into the habit of recycling." Football League
