READING CHRONICLE/Anthony Smith - Royals boss seeks 'hoops derby' justice

BRIAN McDermott has promised Reading fans that his players will show their true colours against Queens Park Rangers tonight (7.45pm ko).

Royals suffered a painful 3-1 defeat at Loftus Road in November when they were second-best for most of the game.

That win took Neil Warnock’s side to the top of the table and they have stayed there ever since as they edge ever closer to clinching a place in the Premier League.

And McDermott admits that loss in West London was one of the rare occasions this season when his side have failed to play to their potential.

Now Royals will get the chance to redress the balance, knowing a victory tomorrow night would enhance their own promotion prospects.

McDermott told the Chronicle: “We didn’t do ourselves justice over at QPR and were well beaten on the day. The same thing happened at Middlesbrough away but it’s not often this season that I’ve had to say that.

“Now we’ve got an opportunity to put that right because we know we can do so much better, and that’s the motivation. We have a game plan and if we stick to it we will have a good chance.

“The main things is that we do well for our fans, give them what they want to see and do ourselves justice. If we do that results take care of themselves.”

Rangers’ tormentor-in-chief Adel Taarabt was once again the catalyst for their win at Loftus Road. The Moroccan scored once and played a key role in further goals for Alejandro Faurlin and Tommy Smith.

A long-range stunner from Shane Long was of little consolation to Royals, but the striker is a major injury doubt for tomorrow’s return clash at home.

And On-loan Rangers midfielder Mikele Leigertwood is ineligible to play against his parent club, denying him the opportunity to make it three goals in three Royals’ games.

Jay Tabb could be recalled in place of Leigertwood, but McDermott insists he is not ready to compromise his attacking instincts against Warnock’s read.

“We’re two teams who try and win games and score goals,” he declared. “There’s no doubt QPR do that with the players they’ve got, and we try and do exactly the same.

“I think it’s ironic that we have drawn so many games this season because the fact is we have tried to win them all. We’ve never gone out there with the intention of drawing any game, that’s simply not the way we do things here. We try and score goals and attack teams which is why the draws we’ve had are puzzling.”

McDermott was referring to the 12 league games Royals have drawn this season, the joint-highest along with Hull City.

Nevertheless, they have lost only once in 14 games in all competitions and have suffered just two home league defeats this campaign to Scunthorpe and Brendan Rodgers’ Swansea City.

McDermott’s men are also eager to make up for the disappointment of tossing away two points at promotion-rivals Cardiff City on Tuesday, when Craig Bellamy struck a 97th minute equaliser for the Bluebirds in a 2-2 draw.

“We were disappointed but things like that galvanise us. So we move on quickly and look forward to QPR. I like playing Friday nights, it’s on the television and there should be a cracking atmosphere.”..Reading Chronicle

BEN KOSKY/KILBURN TIMES - Cook move still on the menu for QPR boss

LEE Cook is still likely to leave Loftus Road when the loan market opens despite the collapse of his proposed switch to Sheffield Wednesday.

Wednesday had agreed a deal with QPR to borrow Cook on a short-term loan ahead of Monday’s transfer deadline, but the winger turned the move down.

Rangers manager Neil Warnock is keen to send both Cook and Martin Rowlands out on loan, though, along with young striker Antonio German and left-back Gary Borrowdale, when the loan window opens next week.

“We’re expecting three or four lads to go out on loan over the next few weeks,” Warnock told the Times. “Some of them need games at the moment.

“I think Lee Cook and Martin Rowlands both know they need first-team games and they’re both fit enough to play, so there are quite a few clubs interested in them.

“They’re not reserve team players and they need five or six games. As long as they’re at Championship clubs or good League One clubs, I don’t mind and we’ll see how they go.”

The Owls have indicated they may make another bid to tempt Cook to Hillsborough, although Millwall remain interested in him – and also in the out-of-favour Rowlands.

Warnock insists he has no plans to loan out another Lions target, Hogan Ephraim – although he did reluctantly agree to let striker Leon Clarke go on loan to Preston last week.

The 25-year-old has started just four times for Rangers since he joined them last summer from Sheffield Wednesday and will stay at Deepdale until the end of the season.

There were no other departures from Loftus Road before the close of the transfer window, although left-back Lee Brown extended his loan with Hayes & Yeading United until the end of the season. Kilburn Times
