Dave McIntyre/West London Sport - Don’t write off Derry, says QPR boss

09/09/2011

Neil Warnock insists Joey Barton’s recent arrival at QPR does not necessarily mean the writing is on the wall for Shaun Derry.

Veteran midfielder Derry has made a good start to the season and recently signed a new deal at Loftus Road, but is the first to admit many do not believe he is good enough for the Premier League.

And Rangers’ capture of Barton, who is set to make his R’s debut against his former club Newcastle on Monday, means Derry faces an even tougher battle to hold down a first-team place.

But, responding to the suggestion that Derry will inevitably be replaced, Warnock joked: “I’ve been replacing Shaun Derry now for the best part of five years.”

The Rangers boss added: “If you look at him in training and the difference in his game since we signed Joey Barton, he’s been a revelation.

“He [Derry] won’t play every game, but you don’t in the Premier League. I honestly wouldn’t write him off.”

Rangers’ glut of pre-deadline signings means the bulk of last season’s promotion-winning side now face the prospect of being frozen out.

But Warnock said: “I think the whole squad are relieved we’ve got these new players. They understand the experience they bring.

“They know we needed help, and now we’ve got that help it doesn’t mean we’re going to be safe from relegation or from losing games, but it gives us a chance to compete at what is the highest level in world football.” West London Sport

TRIBAL FOOTBALL - WARNOCK ON QPR TWEETING

QPR boss Warnock does not understand Fernandes tweeting

QPR boss Neil Warnock admits he's at odds with club owner Tony Fernandes over his love of Twitter.

The Malaysian is followed by more than 106,000 people on the social networking website, which he has previously highlighted as a key way to communicate with the west Londoners' fanbase.

Warnock admits he does not understand the fascination with Twitter, but believes the owner and players can post what they like within reason.

Asked whether he was happy with Fernandes tweeting about players, he joked: "He owns the club. You tell him off!

"I just think it is modern ways really. It is the same with the players really.

"I know one or two of the players do a lot of it and it helps you lads find stories, it helps the journalists a lot. You can't knock it all the time.

"As long as it does not bring the club into disrepute, I am not bothered.

"I think it is stupid really, I must admit." Tribal Football

QPR boss Warnock confident Barton tweets will not go over line

QPR boss Neil Warnock is confident Joey Barton's tweeting won't go over the line.

Barton's exit from Newcastle United came about after he was made available on a free transfer for criticising the club's recruitment policy via his Twitter account.

Warnock does not expect the same issues at Loftus Road and insists the players know the boundaries.

"I think they have all had instructions from the FA about what they can do and what they can't do," he said.

"If they go over the line, they will get charged.

"They all know what they can do and what they can't do now so it's down to the individual.

"You can't treat them like school kids but if they go over the line then they will get a fine.

"It is like a newspaper now and the FA have made it clear with guidelines and I agree with it." Tribal Football

Express/Simon Yeend - ENGLAND WASN’T FAB FOR LUKE YOUNG
QPR full-back Luke Young quit international football two years ago

Friday September 9,2011
By Simon Yeend

LUKE YOUNG yesterday accused England coach Fabio Capello of treating him as “an afterthought”.

QPR full-back Luke Young quit international football two years ago after becoming frustrated at being called up only if other players dropped out and then not getting any playing time even when he did agree to join the squad.

The final straw for Young, who won seven caps, was getting another late call from Fabio Capello for a friendly against Brazil in Doha after Glen Johnson withdrew.

“I just felt for the last two years of being involved with England I was kind of an afterthought,” he said. “Players would drop out and then I would get the call two days later than everyone else. One time I was having dinner with my family on Tuesday and they were flying to Doha on the Wednesday morning.

“I got a call asking me to go out. That was the time when I felt ‘do I need this any more?’ My Aston Villa team-mate Stephen Warnock went all the way out there, sat on the bench, didn’t get on and that probably would’ve happened to me again. It would’ve been the fourth, fifth, sixth time of that happening.”

Young told the FA he no longer wished to be considered after withdrawing from a friendly against Spain in February 2009.

And when he was given the chance to change his mind, he declined. His relationship with Capello and the way he was treated were the key factors.

He said: “I felt I wasn’t really pushing anybody for a start and I was kind of making up the numbers. So I made a decision to stand down and let another young kid go and gain more experience than what I was gaining.

“I just felt a little bit disheartened, after the starts I got, that I wasn’t really being taken seriously for the position. And when I did arrive at squads I felt I was knocking my head against a brick wall. I wasn’t really going to be given an opportunity.” http://www.express.co.uk/posts/view/270119/England-wasn-t-Fab-for-Luke-Young

MIRROR/Neil McLeman - Warnock: Racism is NOT holding back black coaches in English football
.
Neil Warnock has claimed racism is not holding back the appointment of black coaches in English football.

PFA boss Gordon Taylor wants the NFL’s Rooney Rule introduced - where at least one minority candidate must be interviewed for every job - to increase the ethnic diversity of coaches in the game.

But QPR manager Warnock, who has Keith Curle as his first-team coach at Loftus Road, has insisted appointments are based solely on ability.

“I’m not very happy with a lot of these quotes,” he said. “I’ve got Keith Curle working for me and I personally feel if you’re good enough it doesn’t matter what nationality you are or what colour your skin is.

“Some people have had jobs and made a hash of it, black and white. So I’m not happy at all about this racism thing coming into football. If you’re good enough you get a job and you keep it. Keith has had two managerial jobs, other people have got them as well.” *** Mirror
