JOEY BARTON has tried to explain why he behaved like such an ape on the final day of last season.
In fact the shamed star admitted: The chimp inside me took over.
Well, QPR did not monkey around after the FA fined their skipper £75,000 and banned him for 12 games for his antics at Manchester City.
Barton was sent off for elbowing Carlos Tevez and then attacked City duo Sergio Aguero and Vincent Kompany.
Rangers fined Barton seven weeks’ wages — £420,000 — stripped him of the captaincy and then sent him to Marseille on a season-long loan.
He recalled the moment the red mist descended at the Etihad as his Hoops survived the drop despite losing 3-2 to eventual champions City.
Barton said: “I completely let myself down but it’s not a rational situation. I knew we could be relegated, they could win the league and I’m captain.
“There’s a bit of a media spotlight on me so if we go down, I’m going to take a lot of s***.
“I was already getting it on Twitter so pressure started building and I didn’t handle it well.
“My inner chimp doesn’t work well with injustice, it reacts too quickly.
“Tevez has done what he’s done, I have reacted and the aftermath is...”
Barton, who missed QPR’s first three games this season, was hoping to sidestep his ban by jumping ship across the Channel.
But FIFA ruled this week he must serve the rest of his suspension in France.
He said: “I look at it now and it’s almost like it’s not me. I’m like ‘What the f*** were you thinking?’
“At the time in some weird way I thought it was the correct way but, looking at it now, I know it wasn’t.
“I’ve got to learn a lesson from that. The thing it reiterated to me was just how far I am from the person I want to be.”

Ex-con Barton, speaking in the Autumn/Winter 2012 issue of GQ Style, revealed he attended anger management classes and addiction meetings when he spent 74 days behind bars in 2008 for assault and affray.
He said: “I was on a journey and I have a really inquisitive mind so I wanted to learn more.
“I used to go to AA meetings just because I was interested in what people were saying.
“I even went to NA meetings and I’ve never touched a drug in my life.
“Anything that gets you out of your cell is a bonus.”
Despite his ban, Barton says he is happy with his life.
He said: “I never thought I’d have an interest in horse racing or do a crash course in digital media. But I have.
“So who knows what the future holds? Life’s good.” The Sun

The Football Association will not ask John Terry to submit his mobile phone records before appearing at the hearing into the racist allegations against him.
Terry has been charged by the FA with using 'abusive and/or insulting words and/or behaviour' towards QPR's Anton Ferdinand, including 'a reference to ethnic origin and/ or colour and/or race'.

It was thought that the phone records could shed some light on what happened that day, even though they were not used in evidence when Terry was acquitted of a racially aggravated public order offence at West London Magistrates' Court in July.
As it remains a relatively minor offence in the eyes of the law, the Metropolitan Police were not able to seize Terry's phone records or those of Ferdinand or other witnesses.
But it was believed that an FA Independent Regulatory Commission could have requested the phone records in an attempt to better understand what happened on the pitch and afterwards in the dressing room area at Loftus Road on October 23.
Sportsmail understands, however, that the FA have no plans to make such a request.
Terry played for England against Moldova on Friday but it is believed he had become deeply disillusioned with the FA for deciding to press on with their case despite his acquittal.
A hearing that does not include his personal phone records as evidence would certainly be regarded as less confrontational by the Chelsea captain. MAIL

Populous have designed some of the most iconic buildings for professional and elite sports around the world including Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium, Wembley Stadium, The New York Yankees Stadium and Olympic Stadia for Sydney 2000, London 2012 and Sochi 2014.
Substantial work has already been undertaken and now the final touches are being added to a comprehensive and detailed design process.
QPR CEO Philip Beard said: “It is fantastic to have Populous on board.
“Having secured Warren Farm, we wanted to work with the best people in the industry to develop a training ground which will benefit not only the first team, but also the academy and the local community.
“Populous have great experience in this field and are the perfect fit for us.
“Over the summer, a great amount of renovation has taken place at our current training ground at Harlington which has reduced the urgency for us to move to a new site.
“We are working very closely with Ealing Council and are very excited about what we can create. It is our intention to have a fully operational training facility in place ahead of the 2014/15 season.”
