- Congratulations to QPR U-18 on Winning the Newark Tournament by Crushing Liverpool From the Tournament Site - Tournament Photos (except Final) Championship Match -- Queens Park Rangers FC 5, Liverpool FC 1: Queens Park Rangers coach Steve Gallen wasn't pleased with his team's draw in the opening round of the Capelli Sport Newark Liberty International Summit on Tuesday. But, as the old adage goes - It's not how you start,but how you finish. The English side got stronger with each match played in the Summit and saved the best for last when it came out and put away the more-heralded club from England, Liverpool FC. QPR scored five minutes apart midway through the first half before putting the game away with another pair of scores within two minutes of each other to lift the Rangers to the Summit title. QPR took a 2-0 lead off a pair of giveaways by Liverpool's defense in the first half - the first goal was scored by Olamide Shodipo after he intercepted a ball originally destined for the Liverpool goalkeeper and the second was off a 25-yard blast by Aaron Mitchell, who stepped in front of a bad square pass in the defensive end. Liverppool, the only team to win all three games during Group play, looked as though it would make a game of it when Sergi Canos scored just before the half to cut its deficit to 2-1. But QPR ended any suspense in the 53rd and 55th minutes, respectivly, when Reece Grego-Cox and Mitchell connected. Cox knocked in a curler inside the far right post from just off the top, left-side of the penalty area, while Mitchell converted his fifth goal of the tournament after being left wide open as he crashed the box. QPR's Andreas Komodikis capped the second half explosion with a 77th-minute goal. Mitchell wound up winning the Golden Boot Award for scoring the most goals of the tournament. 3rd-Place Consolation -- FC Inter Milan 4, Maccabi Haifa 2: After blowing a two-goal lead, Inter Milan didn't lose its composure and scored twice over the final 12 minutes to secure third-place in the Summit's penultimate game. Matteo Colombini scored on a cross through the goal-mouth to snap a 2-2 standoff in the 78th minute before Federico Bonazzoli sealed the victory for the Italians with his second goal of the match off a breakaway in the waning minutes. Bonazzoli gave Inter a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute on a nice cross by Matteo Cotali. A defensive mishap by Maccabi led to an open net goal by Inter's Samuel Appiah in the 51st minute, but the Israeli's cut the lead in half a minute later when Amit Zenati connected from in close. Or Eiloz squared the match at 2-2 for Maccabi with a strike on a direct kick that found its mark from 30 yards out in the 57th minute before Inter Milan took over in the final dozen minutes. 5th-Place Consolation -- PDA 2, St. Benedict's 1: An 81st minute goal by Jose Mederos was a little too late for St. Benedict's to overcome some serious defensive lapses early and forced coach Jim Wandling's club to have to settle for a not-so-rewarding 6th place finish in the Summit. The Gray Bees, which played well in spurts during the first three games of the tournament and held its head high coming into a winnable fourth contest, left the field discouraged after falling behind by two goals after a lackluster first half in which PDA's Jared Stroud and Brian White scored goals for the New Jersey team. SBP also left too many chances on the field, including missing from point-blank range a couple times and hitting a cross bar on another quality opportunity. 7th-Place Consolation -- FC Boston Bolts 3, Fuddercol 2: Harry Swartz scored a goal in the waning seconds to lift Boston to a seventh-place finish in the in the final day opener of the Summit at NJIT. Swartz' goal, his second in as many games, came in the 90th minute and capped a Boston rally from a 2-1 second half deficit. Steve DeLeo lifted Boston into 2-2 tie with a goal earlier in the second stanza after Fuddercol had broken a 1-1 halftime standoff on Mauricio Agualimpia's goal. RANGERS "CONTROVERSIAL" PLASTIC PITCH September 1, 1981: Terry Venables QPR played Luton Town at Loftus Road, for their first home game of the season. (The previous Saturday, QPR won their season opener with a 3-1 win at Wrexham.) Andy King put QPR 1-0 before Luton scored twice to win it. QPR's plastic was so controversial that originally the FA was not going to allow games to be played at Loftus Road. That never fortuitously didn't occur since that was the season that QPR went on to the FA Cup Final. In ensuing seasons, following Rangers' example, Preston, Oldham and Luton itself followed suit. But the plastic fields were very controversial, with the claim that they gave an unfair advantage to the home teams, and supposedly players getting certain injuries. Also the bouncing ball off the surface, etc. And the term "controversial" came into almost newspaper match report of QPR games. Within a few years, the clubs had all given up their plastic. QPR's Team for that opening game at home to Luton. Burridge - Fenwick Hazell Roeder Gregory - Waddock Francis King - Allen Stainrod Flanagan (A couple of years later, when QPR qualified for the UEFA Cup, their Plastic pitch was not permitted in Europe, so they had to play at Highbury. Ironically, a few years earlier, Terry Venables had co-authored the book "They Used to Play on Grass" 17 Years Ago Today, Ray Wilkins Axed/"Resigned" The Departure of Ray Wilkins September 1, 1996: QPR having beaten Oxford and Portsmouth and drawn at Wolves; and lost Kevin Gallen through a terrible injury, played promotion-challenging Bolton at Loftus Road (and lost 2-1) For newly-relegated QPR still under the managership (player manager) of Ray Wilkins and Frank Sibley and under the new ownership of Chris Wright...The QPR Board met with Wilkins, and ostensibly he left because he wanted to continue playing. But there were strong suggestions he was axed, even though Chris Wright and others denied that. It was such a change from the less than two years previously, when Wilkins returned to QPR after Gerry Francis moved on to Spurs and in his first season, guided QPR to 8th. The following season, QPR sold Ferdinand and made some not-so great purchases: Zelic, Osbourne, Hately, Sommer. And as a player, signed by Don Howe, in a deal arranged by axed Trevor Francis, Wilkins joined QPR on a free from Glasgow Rangers and made an immediate, brilliant impact on QPR. And for the next several seasons, was QPR's brilliant midfielder. There was a slight irony, since QPR under Dave Sexton in 1974/75 had tried to sign Wilkins as an 18 year old from Chelsea. So Wilkins left and instead appointed Stuart Houston and Bruce Rioch (instead of Venables, George Graham or Alan Curbishly who were three names that were strongly touted.) Six years ago today, September 1, 2007. QPR's Takeover by Flavio Briatore and Bernie Ecclestone was completed and officially announced.
[In the lengthy official document accompanying the announcement, it was said "QPR is one of the best supported football clubs in the Championship with attendance at home games averaging approximately 20,000, in the 2006/2007 season." (Actually, QPR ranked 19th in Championship Attendance Figures with average gate of 12,936.]

Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone and Renault team principal Flavio Briatore are set to buy Queens Park Rangers after the English soccer club's board recommended the pair's offer.
QPR, which plays in the second-tier League championship, announced the move Saturday.
The takeover has been mooted at 30 million pounds (US$60.5 million; ?44.4 million) by British papers and should mean the west London team can now plan without the threat of financial administration.
QPR has struggled since relegation from the Premier League in 1996, at one point dropping into the third tier for three seasons, and also owed tax to Britain's Inland Revenue.
Had the club entered financial administration - continuing operations without selling off assets to pay debts - it would have had 10 points automatically deducted from its league total under Football League rules.
Gianni Paladini will carry on as chairman, with Briatore, Bruno Michel and Alejandro Agag joining the board in place of Antonio Caliendo and Franco Zanotti.

QPR was a regular in English soccer's top division and was a founder member of the Premier League in 1992. Winner of the League Cup in 1967, the closest QPR ever came to winning the English championship was in 1976, when it came within one point of edging powerhouse Liverpool.
